Summer may be fast approaching, but it’s not time to close the book on the 2018 - 2019 school year just yet. Students aren’t the only people who’ve learned something in the classroom. The end of the year is the perfect time to reflect on lessons educators themselves have learned over the past few months, and a time for teachers to gather and pinpoint successes and challenges to better prepare for the year ahead.
The process of innovating must ensure a strong, diverse representation, community-driven decisions, and equitable learning that includes an exploration of identity and bias. The new school designs must feature culturally-responsive curriculum, just policies, and broad community engagement.
If equity is relegated to a strand or track at every conference without also being integrally, centrally located in each track, then we are not providing the impetus to prioritize it.
I propose something radical, in the wake of March for Our Lives and the robust political debate about how to make our schools and communities safer. I propose that we – we educators in particular - arm our students, not with guns, but with an incisive ability to reason.
